For the
Ultrasound Research Laboratory (URL)
of the University of Rochester, LJB Development is writing the software for controlling
a 6400 element, 2-dimensional array. The figure below shows the multiplexer
unit built by
TETRAD Corporation
that connects directly to the back of the 2D array (built by NDK).
The multiplexer has separate control of 6400 Tx and Rx channels. For each single cycle of
data-aquisition, as many as 128 parallel transmit channels and 16 parallel receive channels can be active.
Larger Tx/Rx apertures are formed in software using a process called synthetic aperture processing.

The figure below shows the connectors on the back of the URL 2D array.
These connectors directly mate with input connectors (not shown) on the bottom of the 2D MUX.
The acoustically active surface of the array is 48x48 mm**2
